Evolution Crossfire (3)

Animals are not religious!
(This can't be true ... Didn't they get the message from God?)

"Evolution says humans are animals, but humans are moral, esthetic, idealistic, and religious, and animals are not."

commeneted by Morris, Henry M., 1974. Scientific Creationism, Master Books, Arkansas, p. 196.

1. A bird is an animal. It can fly. Gerbils are also animals, but they cannot fly. The fact that one has characteristics that the other does not possess does not mean they are not a part of the same group.

2. Animals do have social institutions, as can be witnessed in primates, canines, and others.

3. Evolution does not, in fact, say that humans are animals. Humans are animals by definition (heterotrophic, multicellular organisms lacking cell-walls). The closest thing evolution says to this is that humans are related to other species

There seem to be enough blurred boundaries around not to get too seperationist - we may be particularly notable, as a species, but we're still one of the many animals around.

I find it somewhat sad that so many people regard this view as a denigration of our humanity. As if it's somehow dosrespectful to find such a total connection with our natural world - what kind of dream or aspiration would wish to fly away from such wonderful company as earth's biodiversity?

I think it all has got to do with the way Bible presents creationism ...

"Day 5: creation of animals for the water and the sky
Day 6: creation of animals for the land, and humans to govern all animals"

Bible seems to suggest human and animals are two completely different living organism right from day one and that God has wanted us to enslave all the rest ... Fine but how come animals are not religious? I imagine they must have some kind of instinct if it is true that God created them the same way like how He has created us?

They probably do?

The stories reflect our difference, in some way, from the rest of our context - ionsofar as humanity has had some existential thing about how it relates to its environment. That is, we feel that there's at least something notable aobut ourselves, we can't settle in like every other species can. We make pictures on cave walls, some say religion and art had a similar genesis in early people. Our species is self-regarding in a notable way, and much that defines us from other animals stems from that, perhaps.
