Halloween & Christianity

Is Halloween Christian?

As far as I know, Halloween is just like Santa Claus, it’s a fairy tale, it’s paganism and as far as the serious faithful are concerned ... it’s plain NONSENSE!

Check this out …

Should Christians participate in Halloween?

The October 31st holiday that we today know as Halloween has strong roots in paganism and is closely connected with worship of the Enemy of this world, Satan. It is a holiday that generally glorifies the dark things of this world, rather than the light of Jesus Christ, The Truth.

Have you noticed how costumes and masks are getting generally more bloody, gory, and depraved each year? Unfortunately, the gruesome and grotesque and the occult are increasingly glorified in American society, not only on Halloween, but throughout the year in horror movies and in television programs.

My family does not celebrate it or participate in it. We do not believe that our children are "missing out," and neither do they. Other days are used for costumes and parties. Happily, all of our children have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. We have found that Halloween provides an excellent time to remind our children that, as Christians, we are different, and not of this world (Heb. 11:13-16; 1 Pet. 2:11). More

Quotes:

"I think we ought to close Halloween down. Do you want your children to dress up as witches? The Druids used to dress up like this when they were doing human sacrifice...[The children] are acting out Satanic rituals and participating in it, and don't even realize it." -- Pat Robertson, "The 700 Club," 1982-OCT-29

"There is [only] one reference to human sacrifice in Celtic literature, but it appears to be a Christian forgery. The ancient Celts might have engaged in ritual killing; certainly other contemporary societies did. Modern Druids, of course, do not." Excerpt from this website's essay on the Druids.

Many books on Halloween have been written by Fundamentalists and other Evangelical Christian authors. There are also many Internet sites devoted to the topic. 1 to 10
Most of these authors tend to paint a very different picture of Halloween than do other writers, both religious and secular. Conservative Christians generally have a very negative view of Halloween, and are very concerned with its growing popularity in North America.

Much of their fear and rejection of Halloween are described below. They are based on:

- Their fundamental beliefs about non-Christian religions, the Occult, Satan and his demons.

- The information sources that they use for data about the ancient Celts and Druids, modern Neopagan beliefs and practices, and Halloween itself.

Well, all I can say is I think 'true' religions like Judaism, Christianity, Islam are so serious to the extend they are mostly confined within the black & white world.

On the other hand, other supposedly 'lesser' or even 'false' (from the Semitic perspective) religions, occults or otherwise cultural believes (pagan or not) seem to be so much more colorful ... Happy Halloween, Welcome Snow White, Have Fun Su-Wu-Gong (Monkey God?)!

Most would think you are "missing out." It's just a fun party!

Its funny how people preach on selective topics in the name of our Lord. While partaking in Halloween may seem to be going against christian values, others may see masturbation as not Christian, as God struck Onan dead for spilling his seed on the ground. And I'm sure you dont do that either right? right.

eileendover,

Thanks for enlightening us about this Onan/masturbation thingy.

I found this unbelieveable statement in answers.com

"Onan was the second son of Judah and his name is the origin for the sexual term onanism (synonym of masturbation).

After his older brother Er died Onan was to marry Er's widow Tamar (this was the practice of levirate marriage). According to the Bible, whenever he had sexual intercourse with his brother's wife he spilt his seed upon the ground (Genesis 38:7-9); the Bible says that he did this because (under the custom of levirate marriage) the child would not be considered his, but his late brother's. In response to this transgression, God killed Onan."

1. "Onan married his bother's widow and have sex with her"?
- Isn't this an act of INCEST?

2. "Spilt his seed upon the ground" and God killed him for this?
- I thought he is being RESPONSIBLE for ejaculating outside of her vagina. Otherwise, any child born as a result may have to suffer for the rest of his/her life, both physically and mentally.

God's judgment in this case is honestly speaking ... questionable.

I wish the established religions would set to with a seriously good critique of Halloween - and indeed the modern (per)versions of Christmas and Easter. In each case there's a commercialisation that tries to make buying stuff and shopping a vital part of celebration and shared stories. And this is the real evil of Halloween - the selling of plastic trash to kids taught to want to spend money in order to have fun - rather than any perceived occultism. And it could be said that the major world religions are better placed to take on marketisation and consumerist nonsense than those younger faith movements that're still easily susceptible to being co-opted by companies with summit to sell (like spell books and crystals).

May I comment on the Onan thingy? Onan had an obligation to his late brother and his brother's widow to give them an heir. He refused to discharge that obligation. That, not any sexual deviation, was his offense.

Further: marrying your brother's widow is not incest because she is not your blood relative. Her former husband was your blood relative. Since you share genes with him, any offspring of her marriage to you should resemble any offspring she would have had with your brother. Hence the obligation for you, and not a stranger, to give her an heir.

I second the comment of Post Liberal on Halloween, Christmas, and Easter (and for that matter Labor Day and Independence Day). But I might point out that all three religious holidays have pagan origins, though only Halloween seems to have retained elements incompatible with modern religion.
